Christ, accompanied by the apostles and Saint John the Baptist, appears to the kneeling Blessed Clare of Rimini (died 1326?), showing her his wounds. Saint John the Evangelist hands her a book which Christ has given to him. This vision is loosely based on a fourteenth-century Life of the Blessed Clare of Rimini.
NG 6503 was probably painted in Rimini in about 1340. It was originally the right-hand panel of an altarpiece, probably a plain horizontal dossal. Another part of the same altarpiece is in Florida (Coral Gables, Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami) and depicts the Adoration of the Magi. It has been suggested that the central panel showed the Virgin and Child with two angels and Saint Mary Magdalene. An almost identical altarpiece exists (now in Ajaccio, Musée Fesch). This has the same two lateral scenes but has a Crucifixion at the centre instead of an image of the Virgin and Child.
In the Monastero degli Angeli, Rimini, by 1755; Ashburnham collection by 1953 (and probably by 1878); bought from a private collector, 1985.
