The small quayside of El Arenal on the river Nervión, which is now in the centre of modern Bilbao, was used as an elegant promenade and for unloading cargoes from ships. In the distance at the left is the convent of Saint Agustín.
NG 6489 is very probably one of a series of at least six views of northern Spanish ports commissioned from Paret by King Charles III. They were made during the artist\'s exile (see biography), and in handling and figure style appear to emulate contemporary French painting.
