This fragment was originally placed above a figure of Saint Louis of Toulouse, now lost, which was on the principal tier (outermost on the right-hand side) of the high altarpiece of S. Croce, Florence. All the other works catalogued here as by Ugolino are from this altarpiece; for further discussion see under NG 1188.
The panel below the spandrel, which is part of the main tier is still covered in its original fabric, and retains the original gilded moulding of the arched frame.
