Nymphs and satyrs with goats carouse before a term of the god Pan. His identity may here be combined with that of Priapus. Pan was god of woods and fields, and Priapus a deity of gardens; both are associated with fertility and Bacchic ritual. The instruments played, the sacrificial deer, and the props in the foreground are either attributes of these figures or linked with such rites. They include panpipes, thyrsi, theatrical masks (comedy, tragedy and satire), and a shepherd\'s staff. The figure with a staff on the side of the urn (bottom, right) may also be Pan.
The painting was executed with The Triumph of Bacchus (Kansas City, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art) for Cardinal Richelieu; both works left Rome in May 1636. They hung in the Cabinet de la Chambre du Roi in Richelieu\'s château, with pictures by Mantegna, Perugino and Costa. (See also, Attributed to Poussin NG 42.)
A number of preparatory drawings are known. Some figures in the painting were borrowed from an engraving after Giulio Romano of The Triumph of Priapus. The trees in the background recall The Feast of the Gods by Giovanni Bellini and Titian (Washington, National Gallery of Art).
