NG 23 has been dated to about 1524 on the strength of stylistic comparisons with the Pietà (Parma, Galleria Nazionale).
A number of copies are known. NG 23 has always been accepted as the original of the design.
Described in 1568 as in the collection of Cavaliere Boiardo in Parma (and probably identifiable with a picture listed in the Baiardi inventory of about 1561); Spanish royal collections by 1666; brought to Britain by William Buchanan, 1813; subsequently in the Nieuwenhuys collection; from where bought, 1825.
