Saint Paul at the left carries his attribute, a sword, while Saint Jerome at the right is dressed in his cardinal\'s robes and reads a book. Both figures are placed behind rather than beside the Virgin, the composition, which is cramped, was perhaps originally designed without them. The gold background and the haloes are not original.
NG 284 is considered one of the artist\'s earlier works.
