Inscribed on the book: Sanct\' Dominic\'.
Saint Dominic (1170-1221) was the founder of the Dominican Order, and is commonly shown holding a lily; the label on the parapet and the inscription identify the sitter or model as Fra Teodoro da Urbino.
Teodoro was a Dominican friar at SS. Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, in 1514. Bellini painted two altarpieces for this church and was buried there. The inscription appears to have been an early addition to NG 1440, but the identification and the date of 1515 are generally accepted.
The painting may have been intended as a portrait of Fra Teodoro who, as a Dominican, would have identified himself with the founder of his order. Alternatively, Fra Teodoro may have served Bellini as a model for Saint Dominic (who was however, normally represented as a younger man). NG 1440 can be compared with NG 808, also from Bellini\'s workshop, which was changed from a portrait into a religious picture.
Probably Palazzo Pesaro, Venice, 1797; on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum since 1895.
