L896 is one of a number of works associated with an artist called \'The Master of the Small Trades\'. The group also includes three street scenes in the Galleria Nazionale in Rome: a Brandy Seller, a Tobacco Seller and a Cake Seller. The Master of the Small Trades has sometimes been identified as the young Jan Lingelbach (16221674), but he would appear to be an artist of quite different sensibility.

The simple architectural background and strong contrasting effects of light and shadow of L896 add a sense of monumentality to an otherwise rather undistinguished subject.
