The Virgin and Child are seated beneath a canopy; Jesus\' gesture may be one of blessing. Saint John the Baptist wears the camel skin he wore in the desert and the inscription on his scroll is from the New Testament (John 1: 29). Mary Magdalene holds a pot of ointment.
The commission and original location of this altarpiece are not documented; as it is on canvas it could have been dispatched from Mantua to a church elsewhere in northern Italy. Mantegna\'s signature probably indicates a date after 1469, when Mantegna was made a Count Palatine (Comes Palatinus) by the Holy Roman Emperor. Stylistically, the picture is usually dated to the 1490s.
