L578 may have been painted as a single devotional work, rather than as part of an altarpiece, and dates from about 1560, when Aertsen had moved from Antwerp to Amsterdam.
The bright, evenly lit colours and the robust, animated depictions of ordinary people are characteristic of Aertsen\'s paintings, whether on a large scale or, as here, in a smaller work.
