Saints Cosmas and Damian, protectors of the Abbey of Liesborn were twins, and doctors, who were martyred for their faith in the year 303. They both carry containers for medicines; the blue and white earthenware pot that Cosmas holds has a dragon pattern. NG 261 comes from a depiction of the Crucifixion, the central panel of the Liesborn Altarpiece; part of Christ\'s robes and leg can be seen at the upper right.
Six other fragments of the scene survive: NG 259 and 260 and four depictions of angels (Münster, Westfälisches Landesmuseum).
Still in situ, 1803; dismembered and dispersed, apparently 1807; bought from the Krüger collection, 1854.
