This fragment shows Christ crowned with thorns upon the cross. At the lower left corner is the wing of an angel.
NG 259 is from the dismembered central panel of the Liesborn Altarpiece which may be dated to the mid-1470s (see discussion of NG 256). Six other fragments from this scene survive: NG 260 and 261 and four depictions of angels (Münster, Westfälisches Landesmuseum); some of the angels hold chalices to catch the blood of Christ.
Still in situ, 1803; dismembered and dispersed, apparently 1807; bought from the Krüger collection, 1854.
