The Three Kings sought out the Christ Child in the stable where he was born bearing gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh). They journeyed from the East (suggested here by the inclusion of camels in the background). New Testament (Matthew 2: 10-12).
NG 6523 is inscribed on the reverse with the name of the patron,Tommaso Generotti, who commissioned the picture for his personal collection. The picture is the largest version of this subject painted by Dolci (other versions are at Glasgow, City Museum and Art Gallery, and Blenheim Palace, Duke of Marlborough collection), and it is exceptionally well-preserved. The composition derives from an altarpiece painted by Santi di Tito in 1596 (now in the church of S. Marcina, Krzeszowice, Poland).
