Lord John (1621-44) and Lord Bernard, later Earl of Lichfield (1622-45), were both Royalists who were killed during the Civil War.
The two Stuart brothers were granted a licence to travel abroad early in 1639 and this portrait must date from just prior to their intended departure on a Grand Tour, probably 1638.
A black chalk drawing (London, British Museum) studies the pose and the costume of Lord Bernard. Van Dyck\'s double portraits are remarkable for the range of compositional solutions employed, and in NG 6518 his composition elegantly captures the dignity and pride of the two young men. Gainsborough painted a copy (St Louis, Art Museum) of NG 6518 which he saw in 1785 in the collection of the 4th Earl of Darnley.
Collection of the Dukes of Lennox; subsequently collection of the Earls of Darnley; bought from Lady Pamela Hicks (with a contribution from the J. Paul Getty Endowment Fund), 1988.
