Saint Ambrose on the left is dressed as a bishop; he was one of the Doctors of the Church. Saint Exuperius, identified on his halo as a knight and a martyr, carries a sword and shield, while Saint Jerome is dressed as a cardinal and attended by his lion.
NG 254 and 255 are evidently shutters from the same altarpiece from the Abbey of Liesborn, but are not part of the high altarpiece (see NG 256-261).
