The subject has not been satisfactorily identified. It has been described as \'The Nurture of Bacchus\', but the figure with a crown of leaves is not a child. It could equally well be a pastoral love scene such as that of Daphnis and Chloƫ. Uyttenbroeck is not known to have visited Italy and the building on the right, in front of which two large Corinthian columns stand, is loosely based on the many engraved views of Roman monuments that would have been available to him.
