After the crucifixion, Christ, his body stiffened by rigor mortis, is brought down from the cross. He is lowered by Nicodemus into the arms of Joseph of Arimathea. New Testament (Matthew 27: 37). At the left the swooning Virgin is held by Saint John the Evangelist. The Magdalen, whose pot of ointment is on the ground before her, leans on the ladder. Behind her one of the three Maries holds the crown of thorns. The skull on the ground marks the place as Golgotha. The scene is set in a fictive gilt shrine, framed by tracery, as though in imitation of a sculpted polychrome group - a device used in Rogier van der Weyden\'s famous Descent from the Cross (Madrid, Prado).
It is not known if NG 6470 was part of an altarpiece for a church, or intended for domestic devotions, although the latter seems more likely. It is thought to date from the first years of the sixteenth century.
Another much larger version of the subject by the artist, dated to about 1510, also survives (Paris, Louvre).
