Hermine Gallia (1870-1936), née Hamburger, married her uncle, Moritz Gallia, in 1893. A government adviser, he was a significant patron of the arts. In the portrait Hermine Gallia wears a dress designed by Klimt himself.
NG 6434 was exhibited unfinished at the Klimt-Kollektive exhibition at the Secession in November - December 1903.
There are numerous drawings for the composition and several pentimenti are visible, much of the figure\'s contour having been altered. The floor originally terminated nearer the level of the sitter\'s clasped hands. The pattern of the floor perhaps reflects the influence of Klimt\'s two visits to Ravenna in 1903.
