The figure in the foreground may be the hermit who converted her. Two unidentified figures are seen at a doorway beyond.
NG 6427 may be the picture of the \'Virgin and several other figures\' that Vasari stated Parmigianino painted for a close friend in Bologna. It is generally dated to his period in Bologna from 1527 to 1531.
Several drawings by Parmigianino have been related to NG 6427. The composition was engraved by Giulio Bonasone (active 1531-74), and copies after the picture are also known, some dating from the sixteenth century. There is another unfinished small painting of the subject of the same date (Paris, Louvre).
First recorded in the Villa Borghese, Rome, 1650; bought by William Ottley, about 1799-1800; in the collection of William Morland by 1814; bought for the 2nd Earl of Normanton, 1832; Normanton collection, Somerley, until bought, 1974.
