NG 6421 is the first of Rousseau\'s many jungle pictures. The scene is imaginary, although the trees and plants were probably inspired by flora in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. The tiger may have been based on a pastel by Delacroix.
NG 6421 was first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1891 with the title \'Surprised!\' The exotic subject and the apparently primitive technique attracted much attention.
