According to the Old Testament (Genesis 30: 37-8) the sheep that drank from this water conceived spotted lambs and Jacob was later able to claim these as his own from his father-in-law, Laban.<BR>NG 244 is a fragment of a larger painting which is recorded in two old copies (Madrid, Museo Cerralbo; Genoa, Villa Rocca at Chiavari). These works show that the Gallery\'s picture originally formed part of a horizontal composition, notably extended at the left of its present format.
