Jacob rests beneath a tree with sheep around him. In the water are sticks of wood peeled of their bark. According to the Old Testament (Genesis 30: 37-8) the sheep that drank from this water conceived spotted lambs and Jacob was later able to claim these as his own from his father-in-law, Laban.
NG 244 is a fragment of a larger painting which is recorded in two old copies (Madrid, Museo Cerralbo; Genoa, Villa Rocca at Chiavari). These works show that the Gallery\'s picture originally formed part of a horizontal composition, notably extended at the left of its present format. The manner in which the copies vary from each other suggests that the painting may have been cut down in two stages.
