NG 6375 was first recorded with an attribution to Andrea del Sarto but is closer to Pontormo. However, the painting also has some features reminiscent of the work of Maso da San Friano (Tommasso Manzuoli, 1531-71) and is likely to date from the 1560s. Many Florentine painters of the second half of the sixteenth century respectfully imitated the inventions of Sarto and Pontormo. A version of the painting in the Art Institute of Chicago features the same pentimenti and so was presumably worked on simultaneously.
Recorded in the Borghese collection, Rome, 1693 (attributed to Andrea del Sarto); bought with the Camuccini collection by the 4th Duke of Northumberland, 1856; bought, 1966.
