Saint Paul\'s attributes, which he has here, are a book and the sword, symbolising the word of God and the nature of his martyrdom. The roundel in the upper left corner shows the Sacrifice of Isaac: in Paul\'s Epistle to the Hebrews (11: 17) Abraham\'s sacrifice of his son is cited as an example of Faith. The composition repeats in reverse (with slight variations) that of an etching of 1655 by Rembrandt.
The last digit of the date on the inscription is difficult to read but is probably a 9.
NG 243 belongs to a group of half-length apostles and saints painted in the years around 1660.
