Jesus Christ is shown on the cross. The Virgin Mary is supported by two Holy Women on the left; Saint John the Evangelist and the Centurion are on the right. The inscription in the top terminal is not original but may follow the lost original; the Latin is not entirely accurate.
NG 6361 may originally have been one side of a double-sided Crucifix. It was designed to be portable but it may also have been placed on an altar. It postdates the larger Crucifix of 1272 painted by the same artist (Perugia, Galleria Nazionale).
The Crucifix is cut from a single plank of poplar. The hollowed-out roundel at the top may once have contained a relic, perhaps of the True Cross. The side terminal panels of the Cross are original.
Stoclet collection by 1925; bought with contributions from the NACF and an anonymous donor, 1965.
