NG 6302 is part of a series of canvases by Tiepolo. This series includes NG 6303-5, and there may also have been other canvases. Stylistically a date of about 1757 is plausible since the series bears comparison with the contemporary frescoes by Tiepolo at the Villa Valmarana, Vicenza. NG 6302-5 were presumably painted to decorate a specific room, perhaps dedicated to subject matter drawn from Tasso. NG 6302 and 6304 were engraved by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo\'s son, Giovanni Domenico, as the work of his father.
A drawing exists (Florence, Uffizi) for the head of the man on the left.
Collection of Friedrich von Rosenberg, Vienna, by 1883 (possibly collection of Samuel, Graf von Festetits, Vienna, by 1859); bought, 1960.
