NG 6279 is an altarpiece, but its original location is not known. A date of about 1740 has been suggested. Several variants of the composition are known, none of which is directly related to this picture.
When NG 6279 was cleaned it was discovered that the figure of God the Father and the dove of the Holy Ghost had been painted out at a later date (probably in the nineteenth century). A number of drawings have been related to NG 6279 (Venice, Accademia and Correr; private collection).
