Narcissus was a beautiful youth who rejected all those who pursued him. The nymph Echo fell in love with him, but could not express her feelings because she had been cursed and could only repeat the last words spoken to her. Eventually her body disintegrated and only her voice remained. The goddess Nemesis then caused Narcissus to fall in love with his reflection, which he saw in a limpid pool, and he died because his love remained unrequited; his corpse was transformed into the flower which bears his name. Ovid Metamorphoses, III. Narcissus in the foreground stares at his reflection; Echo is probably the middle nymph at the left, who seems to be calling out. The lower figure was originally draped and was repainted as a nude probably in the later eighteenth century.
The composition of NG 19 is recorded on sheet no. 77 of Claude\'s Liber Veritatis (London, British Museum), which is inscribed: quadro faict pour Angleter. As such it is one of only two paintings by Claude known to have been made for an English patron (the other is Landscape with a Temple of Bacchus, Ottawa, National Gallery of Canada). The identity of the patron or patrons has not been established.
