This portrait in terms of the costume, lighting and pose is conceived in a Rembrandtesque manner (see, for example, Rembrandt NG 672). It has in the past been identified as a portrait of Rembrandt and was once signed with his signature, but it is now seen as a Flinck self portrait; the identification is made by comparison of the sitter with other self portraits by the artist, such as that engraved by Blootelingh (1640-90).
